Have you ever played a game where someone is watching to make sure everyone follows the rules? That’s like mass surveillance. But in this case, instead of just a game, it’s about what people do in our community every day. We want to know if panopticum or massive watching is good for us and why some people think it isn’t.
What is Panoptikum (Panopticon)?
Imagine a big tower with many small windows in the center of a large circle, where all the homes are arranged like petals of a flower. From this tower, someone can see everyone without them knowing it, sort of like how you can watch your friends play but they don’t know you are looking. This idea is called panopticum or mass surveillance. It means keeping an eye on everybody all the time.
Reasons Why Panoptikum is Not Good for Society
Less Privacy: If there is always someone watching us, it can feel like we have no privacy at home, school, or anywhere else. We should have spaces where our secrets are safe and we can be ourselves without being judged.
Fear to Make Mistakes: When people think they’re being watched all the time, they may feel afraid to make mistakes or try new things because they don’t want others to see them do something wrong. This can limit our learning, growing and becoming our best selves.
Losing Trust: If everyone is always spied on, it might make people suspicious of one another. Trust means believing that our friends and neighbors won’t hurt us or cause trouble. Without trust, we won’t be happy together.
Protecting Rights: Everyone has the right to have their own thoughts, beliefs and opinions without others forcing them to do something they don’t want. Mass surveillance could lead to people losing these rights, making our community less fair.
Not Always Safe: While some people might think watching everyone will keep us safe from bad things happening, this isn’t always true. Sometimes, watching everyone can miss important details or cause people not to report issues because they fear getting into trouble for their own actions.
Remember that a happy community is where everyone has their privacy, makes mistakes without shame and trusts each other. Mass surveillance might not always give us this kind of safe and friendly environment to live in
